00:00 [Applause] 00:07 I'm Jake I'm Yuri we are go for a drive 00:12 [Music] 00:14 [Applause] 00:18 one two twenty BMW x4 M competition on 00:22 the racetrack at Monticello Motor Club 00:24 you probably watched our x3m competition 00:27 review and that's why you're here we did 00:28 that one on the road yeah so this is 00:30 gonna be a full track review we are 00:31 gonna blast these things on the 00:33 racetrack only the x4 MS so what is the 00:35 horsepower and torque 503 horsepower
442 00:39 pound for you torque from a three liter 00:41 inline six with a twin turbo setup 00:44 instead of punching it turn it turn tire 00:46 here we go turning let's see how direct 00:48 it is honestly as much as that sounds 00:50 pretty funny to say it is very direct I 00:52 have to keep reminding myself that I'm 00:54 in an SUV sorry as BMW would call it s 00:57 AC a sac but when you're driving it does 01:00 move around a lot like it gets through 01:02 it but you feel the moveme nt yeah
it 01:04 still does feel heavy you're still in a 01:06 really big car but it hides its weight 01:08 relatively well for how big this thing 01:10 is 01:11 but who's even taking this the track 01:12 this is kind of like if you have a fast 01:14 car and your buddies are going so you 01:15 want to bring this out too yeah or if 01:17 you just bring your buddies and by the 01:18 way my race car broke I'm just gonna 01:20 take my personal car and you will still 01:22 have a grea t time so we are not in
full 01:24 traction off that's why we are not 01:25 sliding right now yeah you can still get 01:27 the back end out a little bit and a 01:29 little bit more if you try really hard 01:31 but it's still very well controlled it's 01:33 not like the 3-series which we drove in 01:34 Portugal yeah that thing will just drift 01:36 and MDM this thing doesn't maybe a tiny 01:39 bit out yeah there's definitely more 01:41 understeer here than there is in the 01:42 3-seri es but this is really big but
the 01:45 suspension is so stiff that I've 01:47 actually been seeing the front left 01:48 wheel lifts on the car in front of me 01:51 when we do lead follow here but it's not 01:53 uncomfortably stiff in any way and you 01:55 can actually drive this in the full 01:57 Sport Plus mode in every mode possible 01:59 unlike some cars we have to dial it back 02:01 I don't think you have to dial it back 02:03 in this yeah so we're doing Sport Plus 02:04 o n the track and on the street and it 02:06 was
just as good on both exactly this is 02:08 like very controllable very good for 02:10 Sport Plus should do it launch control I 02:12 know we're on a race track but we're 02:14 actually allowed to stop here go here we 02:16 go traction fully off because I'm in NBN 02:18 sport ready 02:19 [Music] 02:22 man there's like nothing right off that 02:24 start yeah I know it's just that initial 02:26 bite there's just nothing there and then 02:2 8 you go so how does that exhaust tone 02:30 sound on the
track honestly isn't that 02:33 exciting for the drivers and worse than 02:36 not being exciting it's hard to know 02:37 when to shift yes so we do have the 02:39 head-up display which I am grateful for 02:41 which URI is not but we'll get to that 02:43 in a little bit huge rant so I am using 02:46 it to my full potential but I'm still 02:48 missing some shifts because I'm waiting 02:50 for it to flash flash flash but by the 02:52 time I wait for the last flash it's too 02:54 late and then I'm
fogging down but how 02:55 are the steering wheel-mounted paddles 02:57 for shifting they're fantastic they're a 02:58 little small but they're fine it's nice 03:00 because your paddles are always in your 03:02 hand while you're turning all these 03:03 people who say column-mounted shifting 03:04 is better because you know where it is 03:06 it doesn't matter if you know where it 03:08 is if you can't get your han d there 03:09 exactly if you take your hands off the 03:10 wheel here you're doing
something wrong 03:12 unless you're at some really crazy 03:13 racetrack which I have yet to attend and 03:15 this thing is seriously fast it does 03:17 feel like it's pulling pretty hard and 03:19 it's got pretty good pulling power and 03:21 it doesn't really run out like on the 03:23 straight I meant in pretty fast speeds I 03:25 haven't really looked down I think I saw 03:26 140 miles per hour or s omething and the 03:28 reason you haven't looked down is 03:29 because it's super hard to see
anything 03:31 that's going on on your gauge cluster 03:32 I'll get into that later yeah it's gonna 03:34 be pretty funny right 03:35 yeah you are right about some of that 03:36 but let's talk more steering stuff 03:38 because I've had no issues with this on 03:40 the racetrack you know exactly where 03:42 your wheels are it feels great it is 03:45 surprisingly good for an SUV it's just 03 :47 shocking how good this handles for being 03:49 an SUV si si 03:51 BMW what they say by the way si
si 03:54 stands we're sports activity coupe a cuz 03:56 this is apparently a coupe a but the 03:57 coupe a looks friggin awesome from 03:59 behind on the track it looks kind of 04:01 funny like I'm not sure what I'm looking 04:03 at in front of me 04:04 it's very Mercedes coupe es well I think 04:07 BMW invented the coupe a stuff yeah I 04:09 guess I've seen her suvs it looks g ood 04:12 it looks well you can say that I will 04:14 say it looks like some 04:16 that I would rather have the x3m
but 04:18 back to that exhaust real quick 04:19 so those burbles we don't hear them ever 04:21 nothing not an ounce of burble while on 04:23 the racetrack 04:28 [Music] 04:33 and then when you're getting close to 04:36 redline you kind of can't tell exactly 04:39 when yeah exactly so I've been 04:42 short-shifting a lot and I think you 04:43 have to yeah because onc e you bog down 04:45 once you're like after this I need to 04:47 get through here 04:48 exactly I actually debated putting it
in 04:50 Auto and just letting it out I'll add 04:51 anything but I know I didn't do it so 04:53 the first lap I didn't auto it was 04:55 pretty alright but just not as exciting 04:57 not nearly close did a downshift for you 04:59 yeah it did everything just fine but 05:01 like I didn't really know because it 05:03 wasn't as loud and like punching right 05:04 and you didn't get that much out of it 05:06 because you're not having as much fun 05:07 because you're not controlling it 05:08 yourself
it didn't spark joy and this 05:11 thing does have a lot of grip it's under 05:13 steering a little bit but that's when 05:14 you're pretty much beyond the limit 05:16 anyways and I find that it does feel 05:18 kind of rear-wheel drive II but the 05:20 front wheels just kind of help you along 05:21 when you need to yeah you can definitely 05: 22 feel the rear wheel driving us when you 05:24 take a corner like really quick right at 05:26 the edge and it'll just slip out enough 05:28 and pull you
right through yeah it does 05:29 feel like the diff is actually doing 05:31 something because this does have the 05:32 m-performance diff which is all wheel 05:34 drive but mostly rear wheel drive I'm 05:36 going to floor it on the straight hit 05:38 this curb and send here into the 05:40 driver's seat to complain about some 05:41 things but I will have fun oh yeah 05:48 all right 05:49 first complaint I need to turn off the 05:51 head-up display through the confusing 05:53 infotainment there's
no heart button for 05:54 it but at least it is the older 05:56 infotainment so it's a little bit easier 05:57 to find the head-up display to turn off 05:59 I disagree I could have said hey BMW 06:02 head-up display in the new one this one 06:03 I've got a dick alright fine and the 06:05 reason the head-up display bloc ks the 06:06 roll is because the tach comes all the 06:08 way up there's like no little line at 06:10 the bottom that just flashes when it's 06:11 time to shift I did notice some
of your 06:13 complaints and you are right yeah people 06:14 like me I guess your eyes start getting 06:16 distracted by something and there's 06:17 nothing you can do about it maybe you 06:19 can like block it out and not care I try 06:21 to look way past it and then I'm fine 06:22 my next complaint after I turn off the 06:24 head-up display then you've got your 06:26 speed on your digital gauge cluster but 06:28 the problem there is it's so small and 06:30 hard to see it's not big and in
the 06:32 middle and then when I was going 120 06:33 miles an hour you know what happened the 06:35 needle blocked the speed that is really 06:37 funny I only knew later when I looked 06:39 where the needle had to be to block it 06:41 that brings me to my next gripe when 06:42 you're shifting wi th the head-up display 06:43 off you get your shift light in your 06:45 tech emitter yeah so it actually just 06:47 completely changes how it looks yeah it 06:49 bubbles up in red and then
flashes 06:51 yellow but the problem is if you're 06:52 turning left your hand blocks it so you 06:54 can't see it that's kind of funny 06:56 there's pretty much a whole bunch of 06:57 things that ruin the track experience in 06:59 terms of the gauges for you yeah and its 07:01 user interface like the car is great it 07:03 drives really fast and I'm totally 07:05 shocked by how quickly I can get through 07:06 everything in a big essay see and it's 07:08 something like the Alfa Romeo stell vo
I 07:10 would love to see on the track because 07:11 those shift lights were so great but 07:13 then I think the paddles would make it a 07:14 little bit harder to get into the right 07:16 gear yeah on certain corners because you 07:17 do have to up shift or downshift her e 07:19 but the gauges were perfect yeah the 07:21 gauges were great but I've had pretty 07:22 much none of the issues that you've 07:24 complained about I've just kind of 07:25 worked through them it's fine but I see 07:27 why
you have those problems it's just 07:29 something that could be fixed and 07:30 because this car is not as loud to say 07:32 like an older car with worse insulation 07:34 you can't hear that shift point yeah the 07:36 sound is definitely pumped in but the 07:3 8 tone of the sound at the highest rpm 07:41 when you think you need to shift this 07:42 doesn't feel right it feels like I can 07:44 keep going and we do have a 7200 rpm 07:46 redline which is fairly high but back to 07:49 the good stuff
this thing handles like 07:51 crazy 07:52 it actually grips so hard on some of the 07:54 high-speed turns it was insane what we 07:56 got away with yeah exactly and the way 07:58 it transitions its weight from left to 07:59 right on certain corners is actually 08:01 pretty crazy it really hides its weight 08:04 quite well for what it is and I 08:05 absolutely love looking at these things 08:07 in front of me 08:08 I love the coupe body style I think I 08:10 would go team coupe even though
it's 08:11 uglier oh no can't do that 08:14 how is your rear visibility in the coupe 08:16 eh oh you know what it is noticeably 08:18 worse than in the x3 it is but you know 08:21 you can see a lot further down like you 08:22 couldn't i n the Veloster and so I don't 08:24 mind it at all in which steering mode do 08:26 you enjoy the most on the racetrack I 08:28 have really only used comfort because 08:29 that's what they set us up in I tried 08:31 both and I do prefer comfort so all
that 08:33 changes is the weight basically I think 08:36 the amount of turn that you get I don't 08:38 really notice a difference but it's the 08:39 weight of the steering that basically 08:41 just adds more yeah and I think with 08:42 such a girthy steering wheel your hands 08:44 already get pretty sore if you're not 08:45 used to the BMW steering wheel yeah 08:47 exactly so comfort probably does help a 08:49 bit and something else that we also 08:50 noticed on the road but we
didn't 08:52 comment on it because we kind of forgot 08:53 we're gonna comment on it now when you 08:55 let off on this thing the power the 08:57 engine just stopped running it actually 09:00 activates some cylin ders does help stop 09:01 the torque yeah it's the most abrupt 09:03 stop ever so if you don't drive very 09:06 smoothly it'll actually punish you 09:08 you've got to be smooth on the throttle 09:09 because it's just like boom as soon as 09:11 you laughs the throttle it kind of
feels 09:12 like you're hitting the brakes which is 09:13 the complete opposite from that Infiniti 09:15 we drove that when you let off the 09:17 throttle it keeps pushing you forward 09:18 exactly so because I hated that Infiniti 09:21 so much I am not complaining about this 09:22 because that is not a problem I just 09:24 want to comment that it is there 09:26 [Music] 09:31 how was that 09:32 a lot of fun I was actually so surprised 09:34 at how well this thing handled know what 09:36 you have
to constantly remind yourself 09:37 in your head that you're not in a car 09:39 half-and-half I think it helps see one 09:41 in front of me but the way it handles 09:43 like if you just th ink about the way it 09:44 handles the power that it has yeah yeah 09:46 I'm the lack of leg I'm Way faster than 09:48 it should be and like no wonder people 09:49 are trying to set SUV World Records on 09:51 the Nurburgring which you've been on yes 09:53 I know ice two laps one time I look 09:56 forward to
taking one of these on the 09:57 Nurburgring thank you being dubbed nots 09:59 not happen yeah and if we were gonna 10:01 track an X for M competition on our own 10:03 time wha t would be the Continental 10:05 recommended tire the sport contact six 10:07 so overall we driven the X 3m 10:09 competition on the road and the X 4m on 10:11 the racetrack this is a very good 10:13 handling vehicle and I think again like 10:14 we said in the X 3m review it's the best 10:16 balanced B I mean all of the
super SUVs 10:19 overall has the most points I think and 10:21 this is still very fast and very fun to 10:23 drive if you were gonna take it to the 10:25 race track for some reason which I 10:27 really don't think anyone's get really 10:28 gonna do I think you just don't have a 10:30 good time because we're looking a good 10:31 time here yeah I want you to leave a 10:33 comment if you've taken your fast SUV to 10:35 the racetrack why how did it go did 10:37 anything overheat why didn't you take
a 10:39 car instead like I really really want to 10:41 know for journalistic purposes and we're 10:43 gonna flash the price up right here 10:44 because I forget what it is I believe 10:46 it's about ninety four thousand six 10:47 hundred dollars and Weiser test here we 10:51 go three two one passes good job famous 10:55 my cup of coffee we still don't know we 10:57 didn't find a Dunkin Donuts and we don't 10:59 have any boxes once again but sorry but 11:02 we had a lot of fun in this x4m on
the 11:04 track so let us know what you guys think 11:05 don't forget to subscribe and hit the 11:07 notification bell patreon.com/scishow 1

right through yeah it does 05:29 feel like the diff is actually doing 05:31 something because this does have the 05:32 m-performance diff which is all wheel 05:34 drive but mostly rear wheel drive I'm 05:36 going to floor it on the straight hit 05:38 this curb and send here into the 05:40 driver's seat to complain about some 05:41 things but I will have fun oh yeah 05:48 all right 05:49 first complaint I need to turn off the 05:51 head-up display through the confusing 05:53 infotainment there's
no heart button for 05:54 it but at least it is the older 05:56 infotainment so it's a little bit easier 05:57 to find the head-up display to turn off 05:59 I disagree I could have said hey BMW 06:02 head-up display in the new one this one 06:03 I've got a dick alright fine and the 06:05 reason the head-up display bloc ks the 06:06 roll is because the tach comes all the 06:08 way up there's like no little line at 06:10 the bottom that just flashes when it's 06:11 time to shift I did notice some
of your 06:13 complaints and you are right yeah people 06:14 like me I guess your eyes start getting 06:16 distracted by something and there's 06:17 nothing you can do about it maybe you 06:19 can like block it out and not care I try 06:21 to look way past it and then I'm fine 06:22 my next complaint after I turn off the 06:24 head-up display then you've got your 06:26 speed on your digital gauge cluster but 06:28 the problem there is it's so small and 06:30 hard to see it's not big and in
the 06:32 middle and then when I was going 120 06:33 miles an hour you know what happened the 06:35 needle blocked the speed that is really 06:37 funny I only knew later when I looked 06:39 where the needle had to be to block it 06:41 that brings me to my next gripe when 06:42 you're shifting wi th the head-up display 06:43 off you get your shift light in your 06:45 tech emitter yeah so it actually just 06:47 completely changes how it looks yeah it 06:49 bubbles up in red and then
flashes 06:51 yellow but the problem is if you're 06:52 turning left your hand blocks it so you 06:54 can't see it that's kind of funny 06:56 there's pretty much a whole bunch of 06:57 things that ruin the track experience in 06:59 terms of the gauges for you yeah and its 07:01 user interface like the car is great it 07:03 drives really fast and I'm totally 07:05 shocked by how quickly I can get through 07:06 everything in a big essay see and it's 07:08 something like the Alfa Romeo stell vo
