00:02 [Music] 00:14 so 00:16 i'm yuri i'm jacob and we're going for a 00:19 virtual drive 00:21 2021 bmw alpena xb7 00:25 this is the first sports activity 00:27 vehicle for alpena for north america 00:30 yeah in europe they've got the xd3 which 00:32 doesn't look 00:33 nearly as cool yeah and the only other 00:35 alpena that we get in north america is 00:37 the b7 00:37 which we reviewed a long long time ago 00:40 when we were still on motoring tv 00:42 yeah we went for our ride in it
anyways 00:44 let's move on horsepower and torque 00:47 612 horsepower 590 pound-feet of torque 00:50 from a 4.4 liter twin-turbo v8 00:53 and it's got the zf 8-speed transmission 00:55 which we know and love 00:56 and it also does zero to 100 kilometers 00:58 per hour in 4.2 seconds 01:01 is it really good at driving left and 01:03 right in the fog 01:04 apparently according to the press 01:05 footage yes absolutely 01:07 really good at fog driving how about 01:09 just driving strai ght so we
can get like 01:11 a shot of the 01:12 body uh not so good at that apparently 01:14 no i gotta swerve gotta swerve 01:16 so it must handle really well but we'll 01:18 get to that later so what is an alpena 01:20 where does it fall in line against like 01:22 a mybach or a 01:24 gls 63 or an x7m which doesn't exist 01:29 so alpena is technically its own 01:31 separate manufacturer it's made in 01:32 germany they've had a long partnership 01:34 with bmw 01:35 they basically take bmws make them
even 01:38 more special and unique 01:39 and then limited edition so it kind of 01:41 falls in line slightly above the amg 01:43 stuff but below the maybach stuff 01:46 yes because the gls mybach is about 01:49 250 000 or something where this 01:52 is much less yeah it'll probably be 01:55 around that considering how much a 01:56 maybach s-class costs 01:58 so digging into it what do they really 02:00 change compared to the x7 because we 02:02 drove an x740i a nd then also a 02:04 50i so what's
here they pretty much 02:07 change 02:08 the whole car they tune the engine 02:09 change the exhaust change the air 02:10 suspension change how it looks 02:12 we should probably just start with the 02:13 looks pretty much what i notice on every 02:15 alpena is it says 02:16 alpena in raised letters at the bottom 02:18 at the very front 02:19 yeah so that's one of their staples and 02:21 they typically have like a really nice 02:22 lower lip because of that alpena badge 02:24 yeah the front end
always looks flatter 02:26 and stronger 02:27 in the press material they did say it 02:29 has more power and presence 02:30 and for once i don't think they're 02:33 making that up it actually does 02:34 look like it has more power and presence 02:36 and just like the x7 it does have a big 02:38 old grille and just like the x7 we are 02:40 not upset by that but i'm sure 02:41 everybody on the internet is everybody's 02:43 used to it just like i said they would 02:45 be from my awesome photoshop
job that i 02:47 want to show again because it took a lot 02:48 of time 02:49 and the next signature thing would be in 02:50 the side profile specifically with the 02:53 wheels 02:53 we've got alpena 20 spoke 23-inch wheels 02:57 and i 02:57 love them yeah they look really great 02:59 but the funny thing is 03:00 the gls mybach also has similar wheels 03:04 similar ish but these are a trademark of 03:06 alpena and when we or iginally reviewed 03:07 the x7 03:08 we said it would look so much
better on 03:10 alpena wheels and here you go they 03:12 actually built it 03:12 like the wheels i do they're aggressive 03:14 and sporty but i think i'd like a 03:16 thin spoke turbine wheel instead that 03:18 would be super cool 03:19 like a big alpena wheel yeah that would 03:21 be unreal 03:22 yeah that'd be super cool yes i'm 03:24 expecting that check from alpena anytime 03:26 soon for all of our consulting advice 03:28 here's here's what that check looks like 03:30 it's nothing and then
on this one we've 03:32 got the hockey stick at the bottom but 03:34 it's all chromed out which i think looks 03:36 really nice on such a fancy car 03:38 i think a car like this definitely 03:39 deserves a little bit of chrome on the 03:41 outside and i'm not upset by that 03:42 but around the window trim it is still 03:44 all black which is nice because it's not 03:46 like 03:47 full cheesy chrome it 's like just the 03:49 right amount 03:50 yeah they're just trying to draw your 03:51 attention
to the right parts of the car 03:53 like 03:53 the outlines of the windows aren't 03:54 exactly one part that needs to be 03:56 accentuated 03:57 and then behind the cool wheels we also 03:58 have blue alpena brakes which 04:00 obviously look cool any fancy car 04:02 company that puts their logo 04:04 on their brake calipers is always good 04:05 by me and they are actually brembo 04:07 bra kes which are just badged as alpena 04:10 and by the way you can get optional 21 04:12 inch wheels 04:13 so
you can optionally size down and then 04:15 if we move on to the back 04:16 we do have double dual exhaust yeah it 04:19 looks a lot better than bmw's own 04:21 exhaust which we call 04:23 2020 fake i don't even know anymore 20 04:25 21 fake anyways these ones look pretty 04:27 good 04:27 and between both exhausts we do have a 04:29 new style diffuser which is pretty low 04:31 profile and body match but it does look 04:33 nice 04:33 and then we have the exact same tail 04:34 lights from the x7
and same with the 04:36 headlights obviously so 04:37 we like those there we like them here 04:38 overall good looking suv 04:41 but i don't think it's as good looking 04:43 as a maybach 04:44 but the price difference is huge so i 04:46 totally get it and since this does start 04:48 at around 150 000 04:50 canadian i think it's kind of a bargain 04:52 actually yeah well not for me i can't 04:54 afford it but for somebody i'm sure 04:56 it is well for the person that's 04:57 shopping for the
maybach they're like oh 04:59 an alpena eh save a lot of money yes if 05:02 you're a mybach owner or an alpena owner 05:04 please let us know what you think of the 05:06 other one because 05:07 from here it's all kind of the same 05:10 and can i just mention what do you think 05:11 of the xb7 badge on the back 05:13 when they make an x7m and then they ma ke 05:16 an alpena version of that is it going to 05:17 be xb7m 05:19 no they're not going to have an alpena m 05:21 version there's alpena and
there's m 05:23 but what about when alpina needs an m 05:26 version of their own alpena 05:27 i don't think that's gonna happen but i 05:29 guarantee someone in the world will put 05:31 that badge on their car 05:33 so moving on into the interior it pretty 05:35 much looks 05:36 exactly like the x7 except for we've got 05:39 a few alpena badg es 05:40 instead of bmw badges yeah you get them 05:42 on the door trim you also get it in the 05:44 middle of your idrive controller which 05:46 is all
crystal as well but the crystal 05:48 shifter still says 05:49 x however it's lit up in blue instead of 05:51 orange what i really like about the 05:53 alpena logo is it's got that cool crest 05:55 it's got the red and the blue 05:56 everything looks just like slightly 05:58 different and slightly fancier than 05:59 a normal bmw o r if it was like an x7m 06:02 and i especially like the way it looks 06:04 on the steering wheel yeah we'll talk 06:05 about that steering wheel in a second 06:07 but
i'm happy to report that gloss black 06:09 is not the only option so you do get a 06:10 badge in the center console but you can 06:12 get wood and i would highly recommend 06:13 that bro 06:14 it's called piano lacquer it's not 06:17 called 06:18 gloss black ooh sorry marketing yeah you 06:21 can also get 06:21 natural walnut anthracite i'm not 06:24 exactly sure what that looks like i'm 06:25 assuming 06:26 light brownish wood whatever it is it's 06:28 gonna be better than 06:29 black lacquer
piano whatever piano 06:32 lacquer 06:33 lacquer lacquer another word i have 06:35 trouble saying 06:36 anyways moving on to that steering wheel 06:38 we do not actually have any paddle 06:39 shifters 06:40 we have shifter buttons i think that's 06:43 kind of rolls royce to them you know how 06:44 rolls-roy ce doesn't show the rpm just as 06:46 the power it's like we'll give you the 06:48 option to change it 06:49 but it'll be slightly different like we 06:50 don't want you to use it and then if
we 06:52 look at the gauges it now says alpena 06:54 instead of bmw or whatever the model 06:56 would be 06:57 yeah other than that the gauges look the 06:58 same the infotainment looks the same but 07:00 the rest of the interior gets better 07:02 leather quality and stuff like that yeah 07:03 b ut to like the naked eye 07:05 you don't really notice much of a 07:06 difference you obviously get heated 07:08 seats and we also had heated and cooled 07:10 cup holders in the regular x7 so
i'm 07:12 sure this one's gonna have that as well 07:13 so we can't do the small cup test and we 07:15 can't test the visors but the x7 did 07:18 pass so we're going to assume this one 07:19 does too 07:20 let's hit him with it two one full pass 07:23 yo does alpina sell a package th at you 07:25 can extend the visor even farther 07:27 that's part of their craftsmanship since 07:29 1965. extend every visor 07:32 a little bit more no i'm kidding i don't 07:33 know if that's real 07:35 they might
even not have it because you 07:37 know in germany and europe they don't 07:38 actually use sliding visors 07:39 yeah that's right the one guy from bmw 07:41 told us when we were in europe one time 07:43 but i don't know if i believe that guy 07:44 fully well that was the guy who said we 07:45 could pour water on the usb plug so i'm 07:48 cool with that 07:50 show the clip and then in the middle row 07:52 you can do two captain chairs or you can 07:54 do a bench 07:55 and obviously everything is
gonna be 07:57 power operated just like it was on the 07:58 x7 so watch our x7 video 08:00 and it also has soft closed doors 08:02 obviously i wouldn't expect anything 08:04 less 08:04 and if you fold down the back seats you 08:06 can get up to 2560 liters so we should 08:09 probably do the 08:10 box test box test weird that that didn't 08:13 line up with the actual box test of the 08:15 x7 08:16 actual x7 box test starting with the box 08:19 test 08:19 box test 8 9 10 08:23 11
12. 08:27 14. 08:30 and if you're loading stuff into the 08:31 trunk it's a clam shell it opens from 08:33 both sides and it can drop up to five 08:35 centimeters when you're loading stuff up 08:37 in the back actually it's 5.1 08:39 centimeters 08 :40 and speaking of lowering and raising yes 08:42 this does have air suspension obviously 08:44 but it's alpena tuned so you get 08:46 different dampers you can actually raise 08:47 it or lower it manually or it can also 08:49 lower by itself while
you're driving 08:51 depending on what speed you're going and 08:52 depending on what drive mode you're in 08:54 yeah so the alpena version does have 08:56 added arrow so it's more stable at high 08:58 speeds 08:58 and then over 250 kil ometers an hour 09:01 it'll drop an extra two centimeters 09:03 automatically 09:04 oh i can't wait to experience that on 09:05 public roads that's not gonna happen 09:07 here 09:08 no we're just gonna shut down an 09:09 intersection to do donuts in the
middle 09:11 shooting fireworks 09:13 if you get the reference let us know i 09:14 don't understand how everyone's doing 09:16 that this year you know what i mean like 09:17 there's no one on the roads i guess no 09:19 but t hey've been doing it forever like 09:20 it used to be street racing 09:22 now it's just donuts at intersections no 09:24 intersections have cameras like why are 09:25 people doing 09:26 intersections i don't know apparently 09:27 some place in the states was
also 09:28 thinking about legalizing one area for 09:30 street racing like 09:31 i don't know what's going on anymore 09:32 that was atlanta yeah municipalities 09:35 smart enough and speaking of street 09:37 rac ing which you shouldn't be doing it 09:38 can do the quarter mile in 12.6 seconds 09:42 this is stupid fast for a car of this 09:44 size so now let's talk about all the 09:45 rest of the performance stuff 09:47 so alpena says the engine can best be 09:49 described as 09:50 early
torque-filled urgency followed by 09:53 a surge of mid-range power and a hard 09:55 charge to redline 09:56 yeah that's marketing all right it's 09:58 it's marketing but it's also accurate 10:00 from like what i've felt in other 10:01 alpenas 10:02 oh i know it's just the way they worded 10:04 it's the journalist wayman thesaurus.com 10:06 and it'll probably sound pretty good 10:08 going down the quarter mile because it 10:09 does have 10:09 active exhaust so you can change the 10:11 sound based
on comfort or sport 10:13 then there's also a bunch of different 10:14 drive modes so we have everything from 10:15 sport plus 10:16 to comfort plus i love comfort plus in 10:19 cars like this 10:20 i'm curious to see if they kept the bad 10:22 style exhaust sound like the z4 that we 10:24 had whereas 10:26 every single time or if they'd made 10:28 something different for an alpena 10:30 version 10:30 i don't think alpina messes around like 10:32 that i think it'll sound pretty good
and 10:34 according to the press footage as you 10:35 see it weaving everywhere i think it'll 10:37 handle really well because it is 10:38 all-wheel drive 10:39 it does have an active limited slip 10:41 differential in the back and it actually 10:43 has all-wheel steering so the wheels on 10:44 the back turn opposite 10:46 at low speeds and the same direction at 10:48 high speeds and with all the performance 10:49 stuff out of the way the alpenas come 10:51 standard with all of the driving
assists 10:53 yeah so just like we've experienced on 10:55 the x7 it's gonna have traffic jam 10:56 assist which we really did like 10:58 yeah it's gonna have cruis e control 10:59 blind spot monitoring parking assist and 11:00 everything and then it also has 11:01 something called 11:02 evade assist for blind spots and 11:04 pedestrians but i'm not exactly sure how 11:06 that works 11:07 maybe we'll find out when we actually 11:08 get to drive this because hopefully we 11:09 will so with all
that fun stuff out of 11:11 the way let's get to the price 11:13 it starts at 165 900 11:16 in canada and you can start ordering it 11:18 now with deliv ery starting in september 11:20 yo easy there bmw salesman yo i'm just 11:22 saying when it's available 11:24 i'm not buying one and this is pretty 11:26 much in the ballpark of a gls 11:28 63 according to last year's prices so i 11:31 haven't actually driven a gls-63 yet we 11:33 drove the regular gls 11:34 i did like it a lot but i think this
is 11:36 going to be a little bit more unique so 11:37 if you're looking for something a little 11:38 bit more limited you probably want the 11:40 alpena yeah and then the alpena's 11:42 gonna have the rotary knob where the 11:43 mercedes went full like 11:45 touch pad so i think alpena wins this 11:48 one 11:49 let us know what you guys think in the 11:51 comments alpena or just a regular amg 11:53 or even a mybach let us know where it 11:55 lines up and all those kind of things 11:57 and until
then watch our x7 versus gls 12:00 video and also watch our regular x7 12:04 [Music] 12:08 video 12:10 you Inglês (gerada automa SUV

and same with the 04:36 headlights obviously so 04:37 we like those there we like them here 04:38 overall good looking suv 04:41 but i don't think it's as good looking 04:43 as a maybach 04:44 but the price difference is huge so i 04:46 totally get it and since this does start 04:48 at around 150 000 04:50 canadian i think it's kind of a bargain 04:52 actually yeah well not for me i can't 04:54 afford it but for somebody i'm sure 04:56 it is well for the person that's 04:57 shopping for the
maybach they're like oh 04:59 an alpena eh save a lot of money yes if 05:02 you're a mybach owner or an alpena owner 05:04 please let us know what you think of the 05:06 other one because 05:07 from here it's all kind of the same 05:10 and can i just mention what do you think 05:11 of the xb7 badge on the back 05:13 when they make an x7m and then they ma ke 05:16 an alpena version of that is it going to 05:17 be xb7m 05:19 no they're not going to have an alpena m 05:21 version there's alpena and
there's m 05:23 but what about when alpina needs an m 05:26 version of their own alpena 05:27 i don't think that's gonna happen but i 05:29 guarantee someone in the world will put 05:31 that badge on their car 05:33 so moving on into the interior it pretty 05:35 much looks 05:36 exactly like the x7 except for we've got 05:39 a few alpena badg es 05:40 instead of bmw badges yeah you get them 05:42 on the door trim you also get it in the 05:44 middle of your idrive controller which 05:46 is all
crystal as well but the crystal 05:48 shifter still says 05:49 x however it's lit up in blue instead of 05:51 orange what i really like about the 05:53 alpena logo is it's got that cool crest 05:55 it's got the red and the blue 05:56 everything looks just like slightly 05:58 different and slightly fancier than 05:59 a normal bmw o r if it was like an x7m 06:02 and i especially like the way it looks 06:04 on the steering wheel yeah we'll talk 06:05 about that steering wheel in a second 06:07 but
i'm happy to report that gloss black 06:09 is not the only option so you do get a 06:10 badge in the center console but you can 06:12 get wood and i would highly recommend 06:13 that bro 06:14 it's called piano lacquer it's not 06:17 called 06:18 gloss black ooh sorry marketing yeah you 06:21 can also get 06:21 natural walnut anthracite i'm not 06:24 exactly sure what that looks like i'm 06:25 assuming 06:26 light brownish wood whatever it is it's 06:28 gonna be better than 06:29 black lacquer
piano whatever piano 06:32 lacquer 06:33 lacquer lacquer another word i have 06:35 trouble saying 06:36 anyways moving on to that steering wheel 06:38 we do not actually have any paddle 06:39 shifters 06:40 we have shifter buttons i think that's 06:43 kind of rolls royce to them you know how 06:44 rolls-roy ce doesn't show the rpm just as 06:46 the power it's like we'll give you the 06:48 option to change it 06:49 but it'll be slightly different like we 06:50 don't want you to use it and then if
we 06:52 look at the gauges it now says alpena 06:54 instead of bmw or whatever the model 06:56 would be 06:57 yeah other than that the gauges look the 06:58 same the infotainment looks the same but 07:00 the rest of the interior gets better 07:02 leather quality and stuff like that yeah 07:03 b ut to like the naked eye 07:05 you don't really notice much of a 07:06 difference you obviously get heated 07:08 seats and we also had heated and cooled 07:10 cup holders in the regular x7 so
i'm 07:12 sure this one's gonna have that as well 07:13 so we can't do the small cup test and we 07:15 can't test the visors but the x7 did 07:18 pass so we're going to assume this one 07:19 does too 07:20 let's hit him with it two one full pass 07:23 yo does alpina sell a package th at you 07:25 can extend the visor even farther 07:27 that's part of their craftsmanship since 07:29 1965. extend every visor 07:32 a little bit more no i'm kidding i don't 07:33 know if that's real 07:35 they might
even not have it because you 07:37 know in germany and europe they don't 07:38 actually use sliding visors 07:39 yeah that's right the one guy from bmw 07:41 told us when we were in europe one time 07:43 but i don't know if i believe that guy 07:44 fully well that was the guy who said we 07:45 could pour water on the usb plug so i'm 07:48 cool with that 07:50 show the clip and then in the middle row 07:52 you can do two captain chairs or you can 07:54 do a bench 07:55 and obviously everything is
gonna be 07:57 power operated just like it was on the 07:58 x7 so watch our x7 video 08:00 and it also has soft closed doors 08:02 obviously i wouldn't expect anything 08:04 less 08:04 and if you fold down the back seats you 08:06 can get up to 2560 liters so we should 08:09 probably do the 08:10 box test box test weird that that didn't 08:13 line up with the actual box test of the 08:15 x7 08:16 actual x7 box test starting with the box 08:19 test 08:19 box test 8 9 10 08:23 11
12. 08:27 14. 08:30 and if you're loading stuff into the 08:31 trunk it's a clam shell it opens from 08:33 both sides and it can drop up to five 08:35 centimeters when you're loading stuff up 08:37 in the back actually it's 5.1 08:39 centimeters 08 :40 and speaking of lowering and raising yes 08:42 this does have air suspension obviously 08:44 but it's alpena tuned so you get 08:46 different dampers you can actually raise 08:47 it or lower it manually or it can also 08:49 lower by itself while
you're driving 08:51 depending on what speed you're going and 08:52 depending on what drive mode you're in 08:54 yeah so the alpena version does have 08:56 added arrow so it's more stable at high 08:58 speeds 08:58 and then over 250 kil ometers an hour 09:01 it'll drop an extra two centimeters 09:03 automatically 09:04 oh i can't wait to experience that on 09:05 public roads that's not gonna happen 09:07 here 09:08 no we're just gonna shut down an 09:09 intersection to do donuts in the
middle 09:11 shooting fireworks 09:13 if you get the reference let us know i 09:14 don't understand how everyone's doing 09:16 that this year you know what i mean like 09:17 there's no one on the roads i guess no 09:19 but t hey've been doing it forever like 09:20 it used to be street racing 09:22 now it's just donuts at intersections no 09:24 intersections have cameras like why are 09:25 people doing 09:26 intersections i don't know apparently 09:27 some place in the states was
also 09:28 thinking about legalizing one area for 09:30 street racing like 09:31 i don't know what's going on anymore 09:32 that was atlanta yeah municipalities 09:35 smart enough and speaking of street 09:37 rac ing which you shouldn't be doing it 09:38 can do the quarter mile in 12.6 seconds 09:42 this is stupid fast for a car of this 09:44 size so now let's talk about all the 09:45 rest of the performance stuff 09:47 so alpena says the engine can best be 09:49 described as 09:50 early
torque-filled urgency followed by 09:53 a surge of mid-range power and a hard 09:55 charge to redline 09:56 yeah that's marketing all right it's 09:58 it's marketing but it's also accurate 10:00 from like what i've felt in other 10:01 alpenas 10:02 oh i know it's just the way they worded 10:04 it's the journalist wayman thesaurus.com 10:06 and it'll probably sound pretty good 10:08 going down the quarter mile because it 10:09 does have 10:09 active exhaust so you can change the 10:11 sound based
on comfort or sport 10:13 then there's also a bunch of different 10:14 drive modes so we have everything from 10:15 sport plus 10:16 to comfort plus i love comfort plus in 10:19 cars like this 10:20 i'm curious to see if they kept the bad 10:22 style exhaust sound like the z4 that we 10:24 had whereas 10:26 every single time or if they'd made 10:28 something different for an alpena 10:30 version 10:30 i don't think alpina messes around like 10:32 that i think it'll sound pretty good
and 10:34 according to the press footage as you 10:35 see it weaving everywhere i think it'll 10:37 handle really well because it is 10:38 all-wheel drive 10:39 it does have an active limited slip 10:41 differential in the back and it actually 10:43 has all-wheel steering so the wheels on 10:44 the back turn opposite 10:46 at low speeds and the same direction at 10:48 high speeds and with all the performance 10:49 stuff out of the way the alpenas come 10:51 standard with all of the driving
assists 10:53 yeah so just like we've experienced on 10:55 the x7 it's gonna have traffic jam 10:56 assist which we really did like 10:58 yeah it's gonna have cruis e control 10:59 blind spot monitoring parking assist and 11:00 everything and then it also has 11:01 something called 11:02 evade assist for blind spots and 11:04 pedestrians but i'm not exactly sure how 11:06 that works 11:07 maybe we'll find out when we actually 11:08 get to drive this because hopefully we 11:09 will so with all
that fun stuff out of 11:11 the way let's get to the price 11:13 it starts at 165 900 11:16 in canada and you can start ordering it 11:18 now with deliv ery starting in september 11:20 yo easy there bmw salesman yo i'm just 11:22 saying when it's available 11:24 i'm not buying one and this is pretty 11:26 much in the ballpark of a gls 11:28 63 according to last year's prices so i 11:31 haven't actually driven a gls-63 yet we 11:33 drove the regular gls 11:34 i did like it a lot but i think this
is 11:36 going to be a little bit more unique so 11:37 if you're looking for something a little 11:38 bit more limited you probably want the 11:40 alpena yeah and then the alpena's 11:42 gonna have the rotary knob where the 11:43 mercedes went full like 11:45 touch pad so i think alpena wins this 11:48 one 11:49 let us know what you guys think in the 11:51 comments alpena or just a regular amg 11:53 or even a mybach let us know where it 11:55 lines up and all those kind of things 11:57 and until
then watch our x7 versus gls 12:00 video and also watch our regular x7 12:04 [Music] 12:08 video 12:10 you Inglês (gerada automa SUV
