[Music] i'm yuri i'm jacob we're going for a drive 2021 mercedes amg gla 35 4matic with race start [Music] that's good horsepower and torque 302 horsepower 295 pound-feet of torque from a 2-liter four-cylinder turbo so previously we drove an a-35 mercedes yes which is the hatch that canada gets america does not get it and europe gets it in a 45 and a 45 s as well and this comes in 35 and 45 in canada correct so we have the 35 which is a slower one which is not the real amg because it does not
have a handcrafted engine and it's pretty much the same as the a35 but lifted and plastic cladding and a little bit more suv ish exactly and previously in the last generation we drove the gla 45 yeah that was a little rocket but there was no 35 correct but that was like the a class because it was more hatchbacky than suv yes and now it looks like an suv so the a35 now exists because that's the real hatch sedan sort of thing and then the gla 45 compared to this gla 35 looks pretty muc h exactly
the same on the page builder i feel like the only difference is they open up the vents at the front yeah and you can get the aerodynamics package on both of them which will make them look pretty much identical so hopefully you followed along with all of those crazy numbers yeah do you understand what this car is and where it sits and if you like detailed explanations like that don't forget to subscribe to our channel because we pretty much just live different specs of car s and that's our life
now pretty much now a little booth through cliche not bad a little understeery it definitely understeers a lot more than i would have hoped but it does feel pretty good i generally felt better in the a35 by a long shot yeah this just feels like it was built as an suv exactly but we still have some power if i just floor it power wise it's great it kicks into gear so quickly and it's so much like stiffer and more aggressive than i would expect like comparable bm w to be yes for sure the
overall suspension and overall amg feel is always stiffer in amg's than it is in like ammo or m sport cars okay but we'll talk about that later let's dabble into the looks and interior very quickly so from the outside it's the new style mercedes so we've got the new suv style headlights yeah and overall this just looks like an suv now which i really don't like because the previous gen gla just looked a lot better to me but we have the a too yeah i know and then now on the 35 we get
the panamericana grill where in the previous one you'd get that line across or like the pin style grille i think this looks really premium you get a more high-class look for less money now yeah for sure this front end does look better and move around to the side i love these wheels they are absolutely massive yeah they're they're okay i mean they're not my favorite mercedes wheels at all but they're a nice clean five-spoke they're so cl assic and what would be the continental recommended tire for
a gla 35 the continental sport contact 6 and the viking contact 7 for the winter so this does have plastic cladding and so will the 45 which kind of sucks yeah but it's an suv and then as for our body lines we don't have those old style mercedes body lines that had like the big cuts at the top bottom with the crazy reflections this one is like smoother at the top and a little bit of a hard body line at the bottom not my favo rite but things change and that's good in the future i'm sure they'll be
like way crazier and then mellow out again hopefully because yeah this is a little boring from the side bro the world is waves you know what i mean yeah yeah for sure and moving around to the back we got some pretty good tail lights suv style they are circular yeah we got a cool little lip spoiler a little extra on there and our exhaust is single dual round pipes which looks pretty good and then we got a little d iffuser in the middle but we should also probably listen to this car yeah we
should from the outside [Music] and it does not let you rev all the way out it stops you at four grand so that kind of stuff however a cla-45 will let you rev all the way to the top yes so probably a gla 45 would as well hypothetically so overall looks wise doesn't look as cool as the last gen amg's but now there's an a version which is cooler so it's fine yeah i think this is probably the worst looki ng vehicle in the mercedes lineup b-class i don't think they make that anymore bro europe has
pure ugly models yeah but here okay so now touching on the interior it's pretty much the same new style from mercedes what i really like about this one is the ambient lighting it's these led strips that are visible in the daytime they're very bright they look really good one of the best in the segment yeah and the overall interior is actually quite nice it's a huge step up from the previou s gla which is really good and then we also have a lot of gloss black which does kind of suck as well okay
we have the touch pad and voice control instead of just having the old rotary wheel and i think even the first gla we drove had like the really tap ad tacked on tablet yeah and then these buttons are all matted out whereas in some other mercedes they are gloss black so this looks kind of cheap even though i appreciate that it's not gloss black for the actual buttons how's it go ing i love your guys are you guys doing this today yeah yeah that's super sick drive safe i will mad have a good one is
that the guy that ripped the bias yeah yeah and then you also get the cool double screen infotainment and gauge cluster which you can also get in a gla 250 that's the lower trim which i drove when i went to that pumpkin patch and that was a lot slower than this but it had a lot of similar stuff which is nice but you did complain about the road noise in that one and it is kind of loud in here as well yeah not the best road noise but in an a you don't really expect good noise reduction but from
gla from a mercedes you should in general i think exactly but then there's even weird stuff like this doesn't have a full 360 camera right but it has nice parking sensors and super hd cameras but i feel like mercedes should all have 360 cameras at this point yo it's options on everything but got to charge you for something i don't like that and then yeah this is voice control and this touchpad this touchpad is better than most other touchpads i definitely like this more than lexus and anything
from acura yeah but it's just overall still not that good of a system i just don't like it that much still yeah it takes a lot of getting used to every time you hop into a mercedes you have to like recalibrate your head but voice control works really well and i really think they're just moving to strictly voice control they are for sure so th en in that case it's fine like watch this hey mercedes radio station am 680 news ah see okay yeah it did it it's fine it's not it's not like the most
intuitive but it works it's a new style of thinking yes and then just like all the other amgs we've got our little knob on the steering wheel here for your modes and the little buttons on the left so you can change stuff but that is an option yeah but it's nice to have it exactly i'm just saying it's not on every amg it's just on every entry that we drive yeah sorry we haven't driven any like base model mercedes anymore it's kind of like once you get to a certain point they don't really want to
throw the lower trims at you because they don't want you to say anything bad about it well plus nobody watches those so yeah yeah i mean we did do an a250 in like croatia but that was when like the whole thing was new mbx was new like it made sense why we did that i like i like those it was good and what do you think o f this material up here i like it dark ash wood or something i believe open pour and the way it looks it's completely different than all the other mercedes and then we've got cup
holders that work just fine we've got a phone holder with a little thing that comes out we have apple carplay do we have android auto i believe we do but i'm not going to test it because i have an iphone and then we've got only usbc at the front in front of the cup holder so you need an adapter if you don't have a usbc cable and how about the visors three two one fail fail and then how about the seats comfortable seats are pretty comfortable a little firm on the firmer side but still
very comfortable i have a bad back so like i think i kind of like this more than like sinking into something that just ruins my posture but you can also get amg performance seats which i would not recommend in a vehicle like this how about the back seat room backseat room is pretty good how abou t the trunk space for the box test one two three four five six seven eight nine ten sorry pinpin890 and rajan get your own box on patreon.com slash the straight pipes one more box than the eight class

also crystal clear to tell you when to shift it's just not quite as fast as i would have hoped yeah not as juicy in manual mode just keep it in auto for launches for launches yes for everything else manual because it's still really fun all right so we've got i think the s uper speed gauge super sport super sport gauge and the cool thing is on the right and left you can change it on the right we've got our horsepower torque and boost which is like a really cool animation that is my favorite gauge
of any manufacturer that has come out with like a new style gauge in the last like year and then you can make attack and speed on one side and the other and when you do that what's cool is that it'll throw your gear number in the middle and throw your speed to the side yeah while that is super cool on the left gauge i can't get the actual information that i want the way that i have to configure it moves the speed over which i actually want the speed on the left so just that left gauge is a
little bit weird and i wish i could have like amg sport gauges on the left rather than on the right and i can kind of customize a little bit more on that left side yeah i think it's designed around the speed bar on the left attack on the right and then the middle tack in the center because that looks very aesthetically pleasing yeah which is different than how you can configure the amg gtr gauges but that's also an amg gt that's last gen yeah and before we hit cliche corner we should probably
put this in track pace and use the track base app connected to my phone so we can record it right we probably should but can we no in the a35 video in like june or july they said yeah in 30 days it'll be ready they updated the app and w e're like yeah set up the camera and then it still said no you can't do it so mercedes work on that please i guess yeah i don't know what's with that it's been way too long for that not to work all right cliche corner time before we hit cliche corner i'm going to
put in sport plus because we don't have a race mode because this is not a 45 so full send and it definitely wants to understeer at first but i mean after that initial understeer and once you understand what's going to happen it's pretty controllable and then the rest of it is really neutral unless you have any bit of traction on in which case it bogs down your gears in the worst possible way and mercedes is one of those that when it bogs down it bogs down very poorly yes it cuts the power
heavily which is why we have the traction off for both of us the entire time so i get why they did that for a 35 because they wouldn't do that for a 45 because they traction managed the 45s and the real amg's muc h better than they do the fake amgs well if this was a real amg it would have a signature under the hood does it have a signature under the hood it obviously does not ah it is amg enhanced yeah i don't know i think it's cool still no it's still good like the power train is fantastic but
it's just not a real amg so this power train does rip pretty hard like the boost comes on quick and it's just you get quite a bit of boost and it's really enjoyable to manually shift this eight-speed dual clutch because it does shift quite quickly yeah yeah it's really cool and then you get those cool like red shift lights that pop at the bottom lots of cool movement but what if we put it into comfort got it out of manual and then floored it hold on let's get nice and chill that's pretty good
it's nice it like takes a second to kick into gear but once it does then it feels like you're in full power mode back into sport plus mode let me put you into manual and your traction's st ill off perfect thank you so we can also change the adaptive dampers because we have the optional suspension here and it is quite stiff like mercedes suspension is definitely much stiffer than bmw and audi suspension and i don't think it's actually quite good for a vehicle like this i understand it in a 45
because you really want that performance there for a 35 i feel like they should just soften it up which is why i really think that you should option this adaptive suspension so that you can just drive this in comfort while having everything else in sport plus remember how hard bmw screwed up the x2 with their suspension how stiff that was yeah that was really this is like a million times better than that like this is nice and this is soft enough yeah the m sport suspension on the whatever yeah
the x2 yeah and considering this is 4matic this is not 4matic plus so it's definitely more front biased it does send like quite a bit of power to the back but it's not 45 4matic plus ish yeah i think this amount of power 35 power is for people who want higher than normal power they want the amg badge but they're like i really don't need 45 like i don't need to pay that much it's like that little bump in between yeah i totally get the business case for this and i totally get why people would buy
this particular one and especially with that pan american or grill that you get on the 35 however even though i understand the business case i would 100 recommend the a35 hatch over this anyways yeah you don't need this extra bit of lift i don't think no higher but even like sitting higher it's not even like that good like if your cottage is that much steeper like this doesn't have air suspension it's a little bit higher but just get the a35 it's going to drive better it's going to handle better
it's going to feel like it has more power even though it has the same power train it does go zero to 100 kilometers even faster it looks bet ter there's literally no reason to get this over the a35 unless you just want to sit higher yeah 35 to 35 that one kills us so i think that's pretty much everything we need to talk about about this should we get to the price no and i have saved the worst for last the amg drivers package which is what we have normally includes a sportier exhaust which is
great i love that they include that however i went on the website and i saw that they have something else that's labeled slightl y differently for this car it's called amg real performance sound so that got me naturally interested because it didn't say exhaust you pay for pumped in audio on this car so now i'm going to floor it and use that paid pumpkin audio i don't like the tone of it at all i like the tone i think this is one of the better pumpkin audios throughout the business it's better
than a bmw pumped in audio but it's still pumped in audio but what's better than this as pumped in audio maybe a gti or a golf r golf r okay yeah but even this i think is better but let's let's toggle through that so let me get into the modes so let's do a slow pull in a low gear starting in sport plus oh wow wow i am not varying my foot that is the pumped in audio varying yeah that's that's almost edge st levels of uh badness but it's it sounds good it does sound yes it does sound better than
an edge sd i'm sorry everyone i offended by that but also who else has done a comparison like that with audio tones pumped in like i think we're the only guys who can pull that i think so nobody's ever done that give me some subscribe yeah so anyways i don't like it everyone's paying for pumped in audio now which is pretty crazy state of the car industry let's get to the price well maybe they're gonna have subscription pumped in audio maybe in which case you just stopped paying the subscription
and it's like a good thing yeah or maybe they're gonna have subscription like it'll just say subscribe subscribe get to the price starts at fifty two thousand nine hundred dollars canadian and this one's optioned out to sixty thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars which is not bad so i get that it's an amg so it has to cost at least i think 50 grand yeah pretty much canadian so like whatever and you're not getting the 45 but you're still getting like a bunch of power it says amg it looks cool

it's nice it like takes a second to kick into gear but once it does then it feels like you're in full power mode back into sport plus mode let me put you into manual and your traction's st ill off perfect thank you so we can also change the adaptive dampers because we have the optional suspension here and it is quite stiff like mercedes suspension is definitely much stiffer than bmw and audi suspension and i don't think it's actually quite good for a vehicle like this i understand it in a 45
because you really want that performance there for a 35 i feel like they should just soften it up which is why i really think that you should option this adaptive suspension so that you can just drive this in comfort while having everything else in sport plus remember how hard bmw screwed up the x2 with their suspension how stiff that was yeah that was really this is like a million times better than that like this is nice and this is soft enough yeah the m sport suspension on the whatever yeah
the x2 yeah and considering this is 4matic this is not 4matic plus so it's definitely more front biased it does send like quite a bit of power to the back but it's not 45 4matic plus ish yeah i think this amount of power 35 power is for people who want higher than normal power they want the amg badge but they're like i really don't need 45 like i don't need to pay that much it's like that little bump in between yeah i totally get the business case for this and i totally get why people would buy
this particular one and especially with that pan american or grill that you get on the 35 however even though i understand the business case i would 100 recommend the a35 hatch over this anyways yeah you don't need this extra bit of lift i don't think no higher but even like sitting higher it's not even like that good like if your cottage is that much steeper like this doesn't have air suspension it's a little bit higher but just get the a35 it's going to drive better it's going to handle better
it's going to feel like it has more power even though it has the same power train it does go zero to 100 kilometers even faster it looks bet ter there's literally no reason to get this over the a35 unless you just want to sit higher yeah 35 to 35 that one kills us so i think that's pretty much everything we need to talk about about this should we get to the price no and i have saved the worst for last the amg drivers package which is what we have normally includes a sportier exhaust which is
great i love that they include that however i went on the website and i saw that they have something else that's labeled slightl y differently for this car it's called amg real performance sound so that got me naturally interested because it didn't say exhaust you pay for pumped in audio on this car so now i'm going to floor it and use that paid pumpkin audio i don't like the tone of it at all i like the tone i think this is one of the better pumpkin audios throughout the business it's better
than a bmw pumped in audio but it's still pumped in audio but what's better than this as pumped in audio maybe a gti or a golf r golf r okay yeah but even this i think is better but let's let's toggle through that so let me get into the modes so let's do a slow pull in a low gear starting in sport plus oh wow wow i am not varying my foot that is the pumped in audio varying yeah that's that's almost edge st levels of uh badness but it's it sounds good it does sound yes it does sound better than

and it's like a good thing yeah or maybe they're gonna have subscription like it'll just say subscribe subscribe get to the price starts at fifty two thousand nine hundred dollars canadian and this one's optioned out to sixty thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars which is not bad so i get that it's an amg so it has to cost at least i think 50 grand yeah pretty much canadian so like whatever and you're not getting the 45 but you're still getting like a bunch of power it says amg it looks cool
